During regular Preventative Maintenance and Legionella Testing, Maintenance Technicians are required to use a touch-screen device to 1) log all works performed, 2) record measurements taken and 3) report any additional findings.
In order to do this efficiently the various 'assets' throughout the hospital are, ideally, data-tagged with an adhesive bar-code label or tag.
Assets can be diverse and generally include, wash hand basins, sinks, showers, water fountains, fire doors, fire extinguishers, emergency lights etc...).
Typically, in the case of Legionella Testing, once engineering and maintenance staff have taken readings and recorded their findings the information is uploaded directly from their touch-screen devices to a central computer software database.
For this database to work correctly, it is imperative that each individual asset has the correct identity tag / barcode present and that the corresponding data is correct on the works database as any anomalies will create considerable confusion with the testing of assets being missed or others being tested more often than is necessary.
Over time, perhaps due to cleaning and partly due to other maintenance factors these tags eventually fail or are accidentally removed or might even have been moved by accident from one location to another, sometimes when building work causes the relocation of the physical assets. Invariably the assets require re-tagging and subsequently asset surveying becomes a key part of the compliance process.
We have just completed a survey of all Water Assets at Macclefield MDGH, over 2000 units in total and found over 20% to have been either misrepresented or removed. We duly correctly logged all assets, re-tagging all missing assets and producing nearly 30No. detailed asset enriched drawings for the engineering staff and fire and security services.
Legionella Technicians and Engineering Management staff alike are delighted with the improvements, with a huge increase in Green Light Compliance and a significant gain in terms of Maintenance efficiency, not to mention improved safety throughout the hospital.
